Android – What is Android ?

By Dinesh Thakur

Android is an operating system of mobile Just like Symbain is owned by Nokia and it comes is Only Nokia Handsets. Android is a Software Combinational Kit for mobile devices in the software stack include an operating system, middleware and applications.

Android is the fastest growing mobile operating system. Android is the Google operating System because Google is actively developing the Android platform BUT is a free License Operating System that powers almost all the Super Smart phones today. Android Phone is embedded with a rich set of core applications that’s including an SMS program, email client, maps, browser, contacts, calendar and others.

Java programming language is used for creating Android applications. Google has made it an Open Source OS which means any one can use it. It’s been the most successful Mobile OS till date and nearly 1 lakhs handsets are activated with Android Daily. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android. The Android operating system is currently the world’s best-selling Smart phone platform.

Android is the open Licensed Linux Kernel Operating system. Android phone’s core functionality such as sending text messages, making calls, or using the camera, allowing developers to create richer and more cohesive experiences for users. Android using virtual machine mobile environment. Android does not differentiate between the phone’s core applications and third-party applications.

Android also delivers some world class social media applications that are available on your desktop such as Twitter, Facebook, and Skype applications which are fast and useful. The Android market has well over 200,000 games, applications, and widgets online. It is estimated that by the end of 2011 there will be more than 3.75 billion Android applications installed on mobile devices.

Android is also used on tablets. Many versions have been released like android froyo, ginger bread, honey comb with the latest entrant called as ice cream sandwich. It has been gaining so much popularity that I find it the most discussed issue in most mobile forums including this one. Cheapest android sets have been launched by mts and you can buy one from them. It has provided strong and brutal competition to nokia, ios and black berry os with its entry and is growing by the minute even as I write. Android is fast, is popular and is already creating a revolution.

SQLite for structured data storage Media support for common audio, video, and still image formats (MPEG4, H.264, MP3, AAC, AMR, JPG, PNG, GIF) GSM Telephony (hardware dependent) Bluetooth, EDGE, 3G, and WiFi (hardware dependent) Camera, GPS, compass, and accelerometer (hardware dependent) Rich development environment including a device emulator, tools for debugging, memory and performance profiling, and a plugin for the Eclipse IDE While Android is indeed becoming more and more popular by the minute, it still isn’t the platform businesses rely on for their mobile needs. BlackBerry, because of their robust security services, remains the top dog in this arena.

Android is the first free, open source and fully customizable mobile platform.

Some of the famous Android Applications are:

We’ll be covering the following topics in this tutorial:

  • Google Voice
  • Cooking Capsules
  • Live Chat
  • Twidroid
  • cab4me
  • Commandro
  • eBuddy IM
  • Fast and reliable messenger
  • WaveSecure – Mobile Security

Google Voice

Google Voice is a new service from Google that gives the user his own personal phone number. You then can use your Google Voice number to make phone calls or send SMS messages from the web. And the Android application lets users do the same from their Android phone. This means users can make and receive calls and text messages on your Google Voice number through your phone. Google Voice also archives all voice mails and SMS messages online, so you will never lose that important message.

Cooking Capsules

Cooking Capsules is the first smart phone utility of it’s kind. Cooking Capsules are for anyone who wants to simplify the process of cooking. Simply “watch” a very short cooking show, “shop” with the grocery list, and “make” using the handy step-by-step recipe directions.

Live Chat

Chat, flirt and discuss with other users in this Live Chat application. You can create your own chat groups and create a profile with photo.

Twidroid

This Android based Twitter application is available in a free . Both of Twidroid’s offerings provide every Twitter function you might need, from the basic viewing and sending tweets, following and unfollowing users, viewing profiles: saved searches, URL shortening, photo posting, and geo-location support.

cab4me

Utilizing Android’s Google Maps application, cab4me lets users call a cab to their location with a single click. By using GPS capabilities to locate not only the user’s current location, but also the location of the nearest cab company, theapplication can initiate a call to the cab company with a mere click on the map. The application was developed by Konrad Huebner and Henning Boerger.

Commandro

Commandro shows where are your friends REALLY are and what are they’re doing at the moment. We use GPS location information in order to make sure that you and your friends have actually reached the planned destinations, and, hence, will display 100% true real-life event and location information with regards to your and your friends.

eBuddy IM

Many user want to stay connected on MSN or Facebook chat while they are on the move, well now they can. With this eBuddy Android client one can stay online on MSN, Facebook, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, GTalk & MySpace accounts while on the move. The chat function is very organized and easy to keep track of. Personally i like this IM much more than Meebo because I haven’t had any problems with it (yet). And with Meebo i had connectivity problems all the time. Anyway, its features:

Fast and reliable messenger

Chat with multiple MSN, Facebook, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, GTalk & MySpace accounts

All IM friends in one buddy list

Run in background

Messages sent as data, not SMS/Text

WaveSecure – Mobile Security

WaveSecure is the complete mobile security service that lets users protect mobile data, ensures privacy in the event of theft and enhances the possibility of recovering the phone. Track SIM changes, lock, backup, wipe & restore your data.
