What is 3G Technology?

By Dinesh Thakur

3G stand for  third generation of wireless technologies. It enhancements over older wireless technologies. 3Generation Generaly is  used with Cell phones to connect the phone to the Internet or other networks in order to make voice and video calls, to upload and download data and to browsing and surfing the net.

3G Technical Specifications:

The transfer speed for 3G networks is between 128 and 144 kbps. For wireless Network, the speed goes beyond 2 Mbps (Mega Byte Per Second). 3G is a group of technologies that include W-CDMA, WLAN and cellular radio.

3G comes just after 2G and 2.5G. 2G technologies found, among others, the Global System for Mobile (GSM). 2.5G are midway between 2G and 3G, including General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) etc.

Required for Using 3G:

The firstly  you require  a device (e.g mobile phone) that is 3G compatible. The name 3G phone comes from a phone that has 3G functionality. 3G phones normaly having two cameras  the technology allows the user to have video calls, for which a camera is required for capturing him/her.

Unlike with Wi-Fi which you can get for free in hotspots, you need to be subscribed to a service provider to get 3G connectivity. We often say this kind of service a data plan.

Your phone is connected to the 3G  through its SIM  or with 3G data card, which are  provided by the service provider. with that, you get connected to the net whenever you are in range of 3G network.

3G Cost:

3G is not  cheap, but it is  for the users that need connectivity on travel time. , but most of the user can pays for the amount of data transferred. Because the technology is packet-based.
